Biography

Koku Awoonor is a health systems and policy analyst and researcher and immediate past Director of Policy Planning Monitoring and Evaluation of Ghana Health Service. He is a Fellow of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons and lecturer at Department of Health Policy Planning and Management, School of Public Health University of Ghana and senior lecturer at the Mailman school of Public Health Columbia University. He was a District Medical Officer for over 16 years and Regional Director of Health Service for 8 years. Koku is a public health physician with a PhD in Epidemiology and Health Systems from the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, University of Basel. He is board member of the Faculty of Public Health at the Ghana College of Physician and Surgeons, member of the Advisory Committee of the Primary Health Care Research Consortium and member of the Steering Committee for Knowledge Hub for Scorecard Initiative in Africa. Koku currently leads a major primary health care health system strengthening project of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation’s African Health Initiative “CHPS+” in Ghana. His interests include implementation research, health systems management and policy development, community-based health systems and health program evaluation.
